Mark Cotton ha interpretato una grande varietà di ruoli operistici, da Verdi a Gounod, da Bernstein a Barber. Ha anche dedicato molto tempo ai concerti, cantando Beethoven, Faure, Haydn e Verdi.
Il 2025 sarà un anno molto intenso. Si inizierà a Santa Fe, nel New Mexico, dove il baritono sarà protagonista di un concerto interamente dedicato a Puccini, cantando arie tratte da Tosca, Le Villi ed Edgar. Poi partirà per Miami per la prima di un'opera immersiva di nuova composizione intitolata “Mirrors”, dove canterà il ruolo di Theodore Roosevelt. Subito dopo, Mark partirà per Orlando per riprendere il ruolo di Ribas-Dominicci per l'Orlando Fringe Festival.
Tornerà poi a casa in Germania, a Meiningen, dove a settembre terrà un concerto di arie d'opera e brani di musical di Broadway. Dopodiché, il baritono tornerà a Santa Fe per interpretare il ruolo di Gianni Schicchi.
Ha cantato come solista baritono al Gala per il 20° anniversario dell'Opera Piccola nello storico Kloster Eberbach a Eltville, in Assia, eseguendo Il Balen dal Trovatore di Verdi e il Te Deum dalla Tosca di Puccini.
Gli impegni nel 2024 includono un concerto al Margravial Opera House, dove ha cantato in un programma interamente dedicato a Wagner. È tornato immediatamente a Meiningen per unirsi al Meininger Kammerchor come solista baritono per il Requiem di Fauré.
Le esibizioni passate includono concerti d'opera e di Natale a Lipsia all'Alte Börse e al Kloster Eberbach di Eltville. E come solista basso per il Requiem di Verdi a Berlino. Nella passata stagione ha interpretato il ruolo principale di Rigoletto con la Delaware Valley Opera e Tonio nella produzione dell'Opera West de I Pagliacci.
Margaret Bruetsch del Sullivan County Democrat ha descritto il suo Rigoletto come "La voce di Cotton è spettacolare, ma è stata la sua capacità di coinvolgere il pubblico nella storia a farlo davvero risaltare. È passato con disinvoltura dal buffo giullare alla voce crudele del Duca, al padre iperprotettivo e poi affranto".
La sua voce è stata descritta come “superba”, ‘ricca’, “pura e risonante” e “capace di catturare il cuore” del suo pubblico. Altrettanto impressionanti sono le sue interpretazioni drammatiche e la sua dedizione ai personaggi, spesso si dice che la sua “presenza imponente abbia dato forza a ciascuna delle sue esibizioni”.
Mark si è esibito a livello internazionale con compagnie come Linguagloso Festival, Opera Classica Europa, Hudson Lyric Opera, Delaware Valley Opera, Montclair Opera Theatre, Miami Lyric Opera, NJ Verismo Opera e Opera Company of Brooklyn. Tra i suoi ruoli più importanti figurano Escamillo, Germont, il Conte di Luna, Amonasro, Melchior, Alfio, Sharpless, Rigoletto e Simon Boccanegra.
La stagione 2021-2022 include anche esibizioni con l'Opera West a Santa Fe, NM, nel ruolo di Sharpless nella Madama Butterfly di Puccini, concerti con la Delaware Valley Opera in cui canterà brani tratti da Don Pasquale, Rigoletto e Così fan tutte, e apparirà nel ruolo principale di Ribas-Dominici di Nathan Felix con la Timicua Arts Foundation a Orlando, in Florida.
Altrettanto esperto sul palcoscenico concertistico, Cotton ha eseguito molte delle opere orchestrali più popolari, come il Messiah di Handel, il Requiem di Mozart, la Nona Sinfonia di Beethoven, il Te Deum di Dvorak e il Requiem di Verdi, solo per citarne alcune. Si è esibito regolarmente con il Masterworks Chorus, il Paul Madore Chorale e la Messiah Society di Grand Junction.
Durante la sua formazione, Cotton ha avuto la fortuna di essere allievo di due leggende dell'opera e mentori devoti: Carlo Bergonzi a Busseto, in Italia, Arrigo Pola (insegnante di Pavarotti) a Modena e Franco Corelli a New York City. Quando Mark non è sul palco, ama fare escursioni, allenarsi con i pesi, cucinare, guardare film e serie TV di fantascienza e ha conseguito la cintura nera di taekwondo.
Mark Cotton has sung a wide variety of operatic roles from Verdi to Gounod and Bernstein to Barber. He has also spent extensive time on the Concert Stage singing Beethoven, Faure, Haydn, and Verdi.
It’s going to be a very busy 2025. It starts in Santa Fe, New Mexico where the Baritone will be featured on an all-Puccini Concert singing arias from Tosca, Le Villi and Edgar. Then he is off to Miami to premier a newly composed immersive opera called “Mirrors” where he will sing the role of Theodore Roosevelt. Immediately, Mark is off to Orlando to reprise his role as Ribas-Dominicci for the Orlando Fringe Festival.
He will head home to Germany to Meiningen where he will present a concert in September of Operatic Arias and Broadway Show Tunes. After that the busy Baritone heads back to Santa Fe to sing the role of Gianni Schicchi.
He has been heard as the baritone soloist for L’opera Piccola 20th Anniversary Gala at the historic Kloster Eberbach in Eltville, Hessen performing Il Balen from Verdi’s Il trovatore and the Te Deum from Puccini’s Tosca.
Engagements in 2024, included a concert at the Margravial Opera House where he sang on an all-Wagner Program. He immediately returned to Meiningen to join the Meininger Kammerchor as the Baritone soloist for the Fauré Requiem.
Past performances included Opera and Christmas Concerts in Leipzig at Alte Börse and Kloster Eberbach in Eltville. And as the Bass Soloist for the Verdi Requiem in Berlin. This past season he performed the title role of Rigoletto with the Delaware Valley Opera and Tonio in Opera West’s production of I Pagliacci.
Margaret Bruetsch of the Sullivan County Democrat described his Rigoletto as, “Cotton’s voice is spectacular, but his ability to pull the audience into the story was what really made him stand out. He pivoted from funny jester to cruel voice of the Duke to overprotective and later heartbroken father with ease”.
His voice has been described as “superb”, “rich”, “pure and resonant” and “captures the hearts” of his audience. Equally impressive is his dramatic portrayals and commitment to characters, often remarked that his “commanding presence brought power to each of his performances”.
Mark has performed internationally with companies such as Linguagloso Festival, Opera Classica Europa, Hudson Lyric Opera, Delaware Valley Opera, Montclair Opera Theatre, Miami Lyric Opera, NJ Verismo Opera, and the Opera Company of Brooklyn. His highlighted roles have included Escamillo, Germont, Count di Luna, Amonasro, Melchior, Alfio, Sharpless, Rigoletto, and Simon Boccanegra.
The 2021-2022 season also includes performances with Opera West in Santa Fe, NM as Sharpless in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly, concerts with the Delaware Valley Opera singing excerpts from Don Pasquale, Rigoletto, and Cosi fan tutte, and appearing as the Title Role of Ribas-Dominici by Nathan Felix with the Timicua Arts Foundation in Orlando, Florida.
Equally experienced on the concert stage, Mr. Cotton has performed many of the most popular orchestral works, such as Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, Dvorak’s Te Deum, and Verdi’s Requiem to name a few. He has appeared regularly with the Masterworks Chorus, The Paul Madore Chorale, and the Messiah Society of Grand Junction.
During Mr. Cotton’s formative training, he was fortunate to be a student of two operatic legends and devoted mentors, Carlo Bergonzi in Busseto, Italy, Arrigo Pola (the teacher of Pavarotti) in Modena and Franco Corelli in New York City. The practical knowledge and technique they passed to Mark gave him a solid foundation to build his career.
When Mark is not on the stage, he enjoys hiking, weight training, cooking, Sci-Fi TV, movies and has earned a Black Belt in Taekwondo.
